Do people prefer to imagine armageddon as something past and gone and nothing to worry about?

Are there some people out there who don't believe what the bible prophesies about the destruction of wickedness (as indicated at Revelation 16:16 by Jehovah) but prefer to make up there own interpretation of the word "armageddon"?
